I was planning on just using my keyboard and mouse to play. I hadn't considered using HOTAS. Do you think playing with HOTAS would improve vehicle control or is it more of a comfort/realism thing?

Yeah I think having at least a cheap joystick or Xbox controller will help with flight. As a longtime BF veteran, it's almost impossible to fly a jet or heli with KB&M, but that's with on Earth physics, not necessarily the same as flying in the vacuum of space. Personally I'm going mid-range with the Saitek X52 PRO, but I want to test out M&KB in DFM before I go and buy a $100-$200 HOTAS setup.

How annoying is it? I'm not sure what you mean by notches... How hard is it to pull back on the throttle and push up from the lock? Do you have to press a button to unlock the throttle again?

Triple posts!!!!
I just got a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X for Christmas. Makes Elite Dangerous more immersive still trying to figure out how I want the controls layed out for SC. There any layouts for download yet?
